Baking soda toothpaste can help with cavity prevention by creating a less acidic environment in your mouth and removing plaque as you brush. However, baking soda does not provide the same cavity protection as fluoride.

Baking Soda Helps Neutralize Acids in Your Mouth

Baking soda, also called sodium bicarbonate, is alkaline. Because it has a higher pH, it can help neutralize acids in the mouth. Bacteria in dental plaque feed on sugars and carbohydrates from food and drinks, producing acids that can weaken tooth enamel. When teeth experience these acid attacks repeatedly, minerals can leave the enamel and make it more vulnerable to decay.

Baking Soda and Fluoride Do Different Jobs

When comparing baking soda vs. fluoride, the biggest difference is how each ingredient helps protect your teeth. Baking soda helps reduce acidity and clean tooth surfaces. Fluoride supports remineralization, which can help restore minerals lost during the early stages of tooth decay before a cavity forms, and makes enamel more resistant to future acid attacks.

These different roles are why baking soda can support a healthy oral environment but does not provide the same cavity protection as fluoride.

What to Look for in Your Toothpaste

For cavity prevention, look for a toothpaste that contains fluoride as an active ingredient. If you prefer a toothpaste with baking soda, choose one that also contains fluoride so you can benefit from both ingredients.  However, you must be aware that baking soda is very abrasive, and over time may contribute to recession of the gums, especially if you are a hard brusher.

Your toothpaste is only one part of preventing tooth decay. Flossing or using another interdental cleaner, such as a water flosser or interdental brush, can help remove plaque and food debris from areas your toothbrush may not reach. If you are unsure which toothpaste is right for you, ask your dental hygienist for recommendations at your next appointment.

FAQs

Is it safe to brush your teeth with baking soda every day?

Baking soda toothpaste can be safe for daily use when used as directed. Brushing with plain baking soda every day is not recommended because it is not a complete toothpaste and may contribute to tooth or gum irritation if used too aggressively.

Does baking soda whiten teeth?

Baking soda can help remove some external stains from the tooth surface, which may make teeth appear brighter. However, it does not remove intrinsic stains from within the tooth, and it does not bleach your teeth like a whitening gel.

Is baking soda good for bad breath?

Baking soda may help reduce odors by neutralizing acids and changing the oral environment, but persistent bad breath can have several causes. Ongoing bad breath may be related to plaque buildup, gum disease, dry mouth, or another issue that should be evaluated.
