What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are applied to the tooth’s surface to improve its appearance

They are made from either porcelain, zirconia, or laminate material. They can be used to help resist further discoloration of teeth, fill in gaps between teeth, change the shape of the tooth, and even make minor bite corrections.

Veneers are most often used to improve the appearance of teeth. Commonly treated problems include:

  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Discolored teeth
  • Slightly crooked or uneven teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Benefits of Dental Veneers

The aesthetically pleasing results of veneers provide numerous benefits, including:

  • A brighter and whiter smile. Veneers can mask discoloration and give you the beautiful white teeth you desire.
  • Improved confidence. With a beautiful smile, you’ll be more self-assured in social or professional settings.
  • A corrected bite. If you have minor misalignments or uneven teeth, veneers can help improve the overall shape of your mouth and give you a more balanced look.
  • Long-lasting results. With proper care such as regular brushing and flossing, veneers can last for many years.

Types of Dental Veneers

At Power Road Dental Care, our highly-trained dentist, Dr. Tyler N. Davis, will work with you to select the right type of veneers for your unique needs. Veneers are typically crafted from either porcelain, zirconia, or laminate material; each has its distinctive characteristics and advantages.

Traditional Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are incredibly strong and durable, making them a popular choice for cosmetic dentistry. They have an opaque finish that is similar to natural teeth, and can also be customized to provide the perfect shade of white. Porcelain is stain-resistant, so your pearly whites will remain bright and beautiful for years to come.

Zirconia Veneers

Zirconia veneers are made from a type of ceramic that is not only incredibly durable, but also less likely to chip or break than porcelain. They are more translucent than porcelain and will reflect light similarly to natural teeth for an even brighter smile.

E-Max Laminate Veneers

E-Max Laminate Veneers are a type of veneer made from a composite material, and they provide an excellent balance between strength and aesthetics. They are slightly thicker than porcelain and zirconia veneers, making them ideal for larger restorations or correcting more complex dental issues.

The Procedure for Dental Veneers

The procedure for applying dental veneers will vary from patient to patient and depends on the type of material selected. Generally, veneers are applied in two separate appointments.

  • The first appointment involves taking photos, X-rays, and impressions of your teeth to create a customized veneer. Our lab will do a “wax-up” or mock-up that will show you what the veneer will look like when it’s done.
  • The second appointment is where the teeth are prepared for the veneers, and final impressions are made and sent to the lab. Temporary veneers are made to simulate how the final veneers will look in the mouth.  They are cemented/bonded temporarily while the lab fabricates the final veneers.  The bite is checked thoroughly to make sure it is correct.
  • The third appointment is where the temporaries are removed, and the veneers are tried on. If they are exactly what we want, what we have communicated to the lab to make, then we cement/bond them in the mouth.

How To Care for Your Veneers

The good news is that taking care of your veneers is no different from regular dental hygiene.

  • Brush twice a day for at least two minutes and floss once a day.
  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash.
  • Have regular dental checkups and cleanings.
  • Do not bite on hard objects of use your teeth as a tool.
  • Avoid staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, and red wine.
