Dental emergencies happen when we least expect them. Having a dental first aid kit at home can be a lifesaver when immediate dental care is not available. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, or a lost filling, having the right supplies on hand can help alleviate pain and discomfort until professional help can be sought.

Check out our first blog in this series, Understanding Common Dental Emergencies to learn more about what the most common dental emergencies are.

In this blog, we will tell you what items you should include in your dental first aid kit. Having one on hand will make handling a dental emergency less stressful and will ensure a better outcome for your smile.

14 Items To Include in Your Dental First Aid Kit

A dental first aid kit will make handling a dental emergency less stressful. Having these items on hand will ensure you are prepared for whatever emergency you or your family face.

Here are 14 items to include in your kit.

Oral Analgesics

One of the most common dental emergencies is a toothache, which can be excruciatingly painful. Oral analgesics can provide temporary relief until you can visit a dentist. Over-the-counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort and reduce inflammation. However, it is important to follow the recommended dosage instructions.

Dental Cement

If you have a broken tooth or a loose dental restoration, such as a crown or a filling, dental cement can act as a temporary fix until you can see your dentist. Dental cement can help secure the broken piece or restoration in place, providing stability and reducing sensitivity.

Dental Wax

If you wear braces, dental wax can be used to cover sharp or protruding wires or brackets.  It acts as a barrier between the orthodontic appliance and the soft tissues inside the mouth, preventing irritation or injury until you can see your orthodontist.

Cotton Balls and Gauze

Cotton balls are often used to control bleeding in the mouth. If you have a minor cut or bleeding gums, you can place a clean cotton ball over the area and apply gentle pressure to help stop the bleeding. It is also helpful in applying medication or a soothing agent to a specific area in the mouth.

Gauze works the same as cotton balls but it has a larger surface area, making it useful for absorbing larger amounts of blood or saliva. It’s often used after dental procedures to control bleeding or to clean the mouth.

Dental Floss

Dental floss is useful for removing food particles or debris stuck between teeth, which may be causing pain or discomfort.

Dental Mirror and Flashlight

This pair of tools is useful for examining and handling emergency dental situations. The mirror can help you get a better view inside your mouth to identify any visible issues while the flashlight makes it easier to see inside your mouth.

Saltwater Rinse

Gargling with a saline rinse can help soothe sore gums, reduce inflammation, and promote healing in case of gum infections or minor mouth injuries. Simply mix a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water to create a natural antiseptic solution.

Oral Analgesic Gel

An oral analgesic gel containing benzocaine can provide temporary relief from mouth-related pain and discomfort. This gel can be applied directly to the affected area, numbing the pain and providing a soothing sensation.

Ice Pack

An ice pack can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. Wrap the ice pack in a cloth or towel and apply it gently to the affected area in short intervals to minimize discomfort.

Disposable Gloves

Use a pair of disposable gloves when touching the affected area. This prevents bacteria from spreading and helps keep your hands clean.

Dental Emergency Contact Information

It is important to have easy access to the contact information of your emergency dentist or dental clinic, especially in the event of severe dental issues. Keep this information in your dental first aid kit, along with any insurance details or relevant medical history, to ensure prompt and efficient care in critical situations.

Instructions for Common Dental Emergencies

Include a printed sheet or guide with instructions on how to handle common dental emergencies. This can include steps to follow in case of a toothache, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth, or a dental abscess. Having clear instructions can help you stay calm and take appropriate action during a dental emergency.
